ePetitions actually work!!!!
After browsing the website of the British Humanist Association I came across their Darwin Day Campaign.
I decided to petition my local council with the following:
We the undersigned petition the council to Name or rename a street, square or building after Charles Darwin.
Darwin Day is an international celebration of science and humanity held on or around February 12, the day that Charles Darwin was born on in 1809. Specifically, it celebrates the discoveries and life of Charles Darwin — the man who first described biological evolution via natural selection with scientific rigour. More generally, Darwin Day expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity.
After 6 months of waiting I finally got this response:
Having considered this ePetition, the Council’s Director of Technical Services is proposing that, subject to satisfactory consultation with a number of local stakeholders and Ward Councillors, a section of road which is being extended in the Bromborough area called Dock Road North will be renamed to Charles Darwin Way.
